The Ryan/Jean Schmidt saga happened in several steps.
1.
Ryan first met Jean the the Peebles Old Timer's Day Parade, when he informed her she lost the county by 200 votes.
2.
In the same week Ryan sent letters to both her and state rep Danny Bubp, for different reasons. Both letters were
published in the local paper.
3. Jean called Danny (or vice versa) to talk about the letters.
During this conversation Danny told Jean that Congressman John Murtha was a coward for wanting to withdraw from Iraq.
4.
Jean goes on the floor to repeat the comments, and is booed by Congress, then parodied on Saturday Night Live.
5.
After meeting and having his picture taken with Jean Schmidt, Ryan goes on a goodwill vacation with her across the world.
