Dear Editor,
Last week's front-page photo of an icicle dangling precariously from a rain gutter was a truly beautiful photograph;
encapsulating the elegance of nature we so often overlook. However, the
photo also sent a "chill" up my spine. To think, such menacing stalactites could
be over my head every time I walk under a rain gutter! I'm grateful for
the timely reporting of this public safety crisis.
But why was there no more information accompanying the photo? Whatever
happened to the icicle? Was it dealt with, or does it hang outside Spencer's
Law Firm to this day? Was anyone harmed by the icicle? Were Mr. Spencer and his staff evacuated? What is the government
doing to halt Icicle Proliferation? What can I, as a citizen, do to impede the
growing icicle menace?
There is currently an icicle dangling from my next-door neighbor's eave. Should
I try to approach the icicle myself, or phone the Sheriffs Office and leave it to professionals? I warned my neighbor of the hazard hanging from her roof. Instead
of responding with concern, she sleepily asked me what time it was. When I anxiously
responded 3 AM, she told me I have too much free time on my hands. I'll tell
you what I have too much of--icicles!
I have taken two rolls of photos of the icicles on my street. After the
film is developed, I will send them to you for publication consideration.
Thank you,
Ryan Arey
